REQUIREMENTS FOR MEMBERSHIP IN THE HURRICANE WATCH NET

1. CAPABILITY TO ACQUIRE NATIONAL HURRICANE CENTER (NHC) ADVISORIES - Net members must have the means to acquire the latest advisories on tropical cyclones.  This can most easily be accomplished with a connection to the world wide web.
   
   
2. GENERAL KNOWLEDGE OF TROPICAL WEATHER - Since the mission of the Hurricane Watch Net involves transmission and collection of weather information, members must have a working knowledge of tropical weather and its terminology.
   
   
3. APPROPRIATE LEVEL OF AMATEUR RADIO LICENSE - Net members must hold an appropriate amateur radio license to operate legally on 14.325 in the 20 meter band.
   
   
4. KNOWLEDGE OF FCC RULES AND REGULATIONS - Net members must be knowledgeable of FCC rules and regulations especially those pertaining to emergency communications.  Consequently, members outside the U.S. must have knowledge of their respective countries rules and regulations.
   
   
5. GENERAL KNOWLEDGE OF GEOGRAPHY OF THE AREAS AFFECTED BY HURRICANES - This includes the North Atlantic, Caribbean Sea, the Gulf of Mexico and the Eastern Pacific.
   
   
6. EXPERIENCE IN HANDLING RADIO TRAFFIC - Since the mission of our Net involves traffic handling, members should have or acquire experience in handling radio traffic.  Be advised however, we are NOT a health and welfare net.
   
   
7. ABILITY TO PLOT STORM COORDINATES, TO ACCURATELY MEASURE DISTANCES IN NAUTICAL MILES, STATUTE MILES AND KILOMETERS AND WITH CONVERSION TABLES BE ABLE TO CONVERT DISTANCES FROM ONE SYSTEM TO ANOTHER.
   
   
8. ABILITY TO ACCURATELY TRANSMIT INFORMATION
   
   
9. THE DESIRE TO COMMUNICATE IN AN ACCURATE PROFESSIONAL MANNER AND TO COMMIT TO PARTICIPATION IN NET OPERATIONS.
   
   
10. SUCCESSFUL COMPLETION OF A PROBATIONARY PERIOD.  This probationary period will allow potential members to see if they like participating in the Hurricane Watch Net and will allow the Net Management the opportunity to observe an individuals operating skill, willingness to participate in Net operations and enable a fair assessment of required qualifications.

It is also recommended that Net members have some computer skills.
